HOBAN HEADLINES

Art teacher’s work takes first place at exhibition
Artist and art educator Micah Kraus won first place in the Photography Now: The Art of Seeing exhibition, now showing at Summit Artspace on East Market. His piece, Ho-Chun, began as a digital black-and-white photograph taken off Arlington Street. The image was inverted and engraved into a cotton paper coated with blue-black ink, using the laser engraver at the Akron-Summit County Public Library.
 Beacon Journal names Grant Kersh Scholar Athlete
Recent graduate Grant Kersh was one of the Beacon Journal’s Scholar Athletes for 2017. Schools nominated candidates from which the paper’s sports staff selected winners, using a weighted scale of 40 percent athletics, 40 percent academics and 20 percent community involvement. Kersh was a starter on the football and baseball teams and carried a 3.6 GPA. Bridget Wiedt was Hoban’s other nominee.
Softball standout receives NFCA All-Region honors
Recent graduate Laney Jones was named a pitcher on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's First Team All-Region for the North Region. A total of 160 student-athletes representing 93 programs received 2017 NFCA High School All-Region accolades. These awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s five regions with first- and second-team recognitions.
Students, parents volunteer at Goodyear Heights food center
A group of Hoban students and parent leaders volunteered last month at the Good Neighbors Goodyear Heights Community Outreach and Food Center. They helped unload food deliveries, cleaned, stocked shelves and served those in need. The voluneers were Mr. Tom Hottinger, Mrs. Kim Pickens, seniors Emma Harry and Victor Vogt, juniors Allison Donatelli, Joel Hottinger, Michael Jorgenson and Erynn Ouellette, sophomores Madelyn Ferree and Christina Worchester, and freshmen Connor Butler, Erin Morehead and Dillon Walsh.
