Advancement

When the Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C., and his companion Brothers of Holy Cross established the University of Notre Dame in 1842, the Holy Cross educational tradition was born in the United States. In the early 1950s, Archbishop Edward F. Hoban invited the Brothers of Holy Cross to staff a new high school to be named in his honor. The brothers had taught him as a boy, and he knew their commitment to excellence within a community of faith.

Hoban is a private coeducational Catholic high school in the Diocese of Cleveland sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross. In the spirit of Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, the school’s vision is to develop in its graduates the competence to see and the courage to act.

Founded in 1953 as a comprehensive “school for men taught by men,” Hoban has proudly served both young men and women in the Holy Cross tradition since 1973. Today Hoban is a diverse educational community, with an outstanding reputation for excellence—balancing academics, athletics and cocurriculars. The school was rechartered as a special-purpose, college preparatory school in 2009.

The lives and accomplishments of over 8,000 graduates provide ample proof of the strength and success of this extraordinary school. They are visible leaders in churches, education, business, industry, health care and social services. With their support over the last 15 years, Hoban has invested almost $20 million in technology, campus improvements and endowment.

The office of advancement promotes (“advances”) the mission of Hoban by generating financial support, promoting the school and cultivating lifetime connections among Hoban’s various constituents.

Financial Support
For over 55 years, alumni, parents and friends have responded generously to the various fundraising programs at Hoban. Annual fundraising is especially important because Hoban is a private institution and does not receive general public funding or diocesan subsidies. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of operating Hoban each year.

There are three primary areas in which you can financially support Hoban:
  • Annual Giving: Your gift to the HOBAN Fund and/or your support of events fund-raisers will help provide consistent support to the educational process on an annual basis. To read more about the importance of your annual gift, click here.
  • Endowed Scholarships: Your gift to an Endowed Scholarship or establishing a named endowed scholarship is key to a strong endowment. A strong endowment is critical to ensuring Hoban’s continued stability.
  • Planned Giving: Planned gifts of various types (bequests, annuities, trusts, life insurance, savings bonds, etc.) provide the greatest opportunity for significant endowment growth. These gifts will last forever.

Ever since the rallying cry of "Hoban Forever" in 1976, Hoban has relied on the generosity and loyalty of alumni, parents and friends. With your continued support, we can meet the needs of today and provide hope for the future.

Alumni

The Alumni Association was established in 1977 to promote the welfare of the school through educational, social and charitable programs and activities. It also serves as a vehicle through which graduates may maintain contact with their alma mater.
