Mathematics is integrally involved in many facets of human life. Today's technological, information-based society demands a high degree of quantitative numeracy. From such practical activities as attempting to balance an inordinately stubborn checkbook or multiplying a cookbook recipe to calculating the stress factors in the underpinnings of the latest architectural wonder, mathematics continues to prove itself invaluable. The Hoban curriculum offers a wide variety of courses that respect individual interest and achievement. Initial placement in Grade 9 will be made on the basis of the High School Placement Test and the Ohio Proficiency Tests and previous academic work in mathematics. Intermediate Algebra I is required for graduation.
Computer use will be promoted, but computers and computer science will not replace mathematics or mathematics teachers. Use of computers will eliminate repetition and routine and will allow more time for the development of symbol sense as opposed to computational accuracy.
