Ghana Trip

Hoban students, accompanied by campus ministers Scott Kopp and Jason Horinger and teachers Mandy Senn and Cindi Kinnan, arrived in Ghana on June 4, 2009.  That very night they traveled to the District Center of Holy Cross in Ghana at Brafoyaw.  The following morning began with an orientation, a hike to the nearby fishing village of Moree, a visit to Elmina Castle and later in the evening a welcome dinner on the rooftop of the Holy Cross District Center.  You can see a few photos by clicking on the link below.

On Wednesday, June 10, they all set out to visit Holy Cross in the Western Region of Ghana.  They first visited the Holy Cross Skills Training Center.  There they enjoyed a morning of interaction--of working side by side with the students they have helped support.  They worked with the students as they continued building their new production unit building.  Some photos of that visit can be found below.  Click on the link. The visit to the Skills Center ended with a presentation of Hoban T-shirts and some soccer balls and basketballs.

After a morning of work and lunch, they visited the founding institution of Holy Cross in Ghana, St. John’s Secondary School.  After some time with the community and students at St. John’s, they began their journey back to Brafoyaw--the District Center.  On the way they stopped for their final visit to a Holy Cross House in the Western Region, Moreau House Pre-Novitiate at Butumagyebu.  This is one of Holy Cross Formation Houses where young men who wish to become Holy Cross Brothers spend a year in prayer, study and work, preparing themselves to enter into the novitiate year program, at the end of which they make their first vows as Brothers of Holy Cross.  Link to photos to see by clicking on the link below.

The Hoban students and staff concluded their time in Ghana with a farewell dinner on the rooftop of the Holy Cross District Center at Brafoyaw.  The family of Holy Cross in Ghana gathered with the students and staff on the evening of June 13.  It was a great evening: music, food, people, new friendships and a lot to share and talk about and to be thankful for.  Below is a link to photos from the farewell dinner.

This was the first, hopefully not the last, time Hoban has visited Holy Cross in Ghana.
