Five seniors named Commended Students

Archbishop Hoban High School is proud to announce five seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. Brody Franjesh, Joseph Redle, Francis Rinaldi, John Wiencek and Mukun Zhou are recognized for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry. Earlier this year, Hoban also seniors Colin Doss and Joseph Markowski were named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their academic successes. Although they will not continue in the 2023 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

With a total of seven students recognized this year, Hoban celebrates the students’ hard work and the efforts and support of their parents, families and educators. In the past five years, 45 Hoban students have been acknowledged for their academic abilities by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

“It’s always exciting to witness students’ journeys and their accomplishments,” Principal T.K. Griffith said. “Among this group recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program, several are Hoban legacy students, as one or both parents and even grandparents graduated from Hoban. It is also quite impressive to celebrate Mukun’s recognition as the first Hoban international student to be named a Commended Student.”
