Senior Collin McDermott is a National Medalist in the 2022 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. McDermott received a Silver Key for his photograph, "Man Behind the Net."
In January, McDermott's artwork along with 33 other Hoban students' artworks received recognition in the Northeast-Central Ohio Art Region category of the Scholastic Art competition. "Man Behind the Net" received a Gold Key award at the regional level, qualifying it to be judged at the national level.
In 2022, more than 100,000 students submitted 260,000+ artworks to the Scholastics Art & Writing competition. Fewer than 1% of those received a National Medal. McDermott's photograph will be exhibited in the Scholastics online gallery artandwriting.org in June.
Since 1923, the Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Collin is now part of that legacy, joining the ranks of notable alumni, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates and Andy Warhol—all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens.
