Archbishop Hoban High School is thrilled to announce the groundbreaking of its new state-of-the-art student center, marking a significant milestone in the school’s growth and commitment to enhancing student life. The school held a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, Oct. 11 at 10:30 a.m. on the north side of the campus, near Barry Gym, where the student center will be constructed. Donors who have contributed to the capital campaign, Hoban’s Board of Directors, representatives from the City of Akron, Portal & Associates Architecture & Planning and Engelke Construction Solutions, and Hoban faculty and staff and students attended the event.
The student center, designed to be a dynamic 14,500-square-foot facility, will serve as a central hub for student activities and engagement. The two-story building will feature a modern cafeteria with lounge-style seating, a fully equipped kitchen and spacious event and meeting areas, all designed to foster a welcoming “home-away-from-home” environment for Hoban students.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our alumni and friends, whose support has made this project possible,” said President Chris DiMauro. “With our growing enrollment numbers, this new facility is crucial to the future of Hoban. We anticipate starting construction in mid-October and are hopeful for completion by the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.”
The new student center will not only enhance daily student experiences but also centralize before and after-school activities, providing a safe and engaging space for students to connect and collaborate. This development is part of a broader vision that includes the renovation of Foley Commons into modern classroom spaces, the creation of a new Academic Success Center, and the establishment of upgraded school counseling offices. Additionally, air conditioning will be installed throughout the school to improve comfort and learning conditions.
“This is a transformative new footprint for Archbishop Hoban High School,” DiMauro said. “We are excited to continue sharing our vision with the community and look forward to the positive impact these changes will have on our students and their overall experience.”
