Sperling wins prestigious Ohio Mr. Football award

The Ohio Prep Sportswriters Association (OPSWA) announced senior Lamar Sperling as the winner of the prestigious Ohio Mr. Football award on Dec. 1, 2022. The OPSWA presents Mr. Football to the state's top player each season. It was voted on by the more than 200 members of the OPSWA.

Sperling finished the season with 3,867 rushing yards and 58 rushing touchdowns, both school records, on 417 carries in 16 games. He also had one receiving TD this season. The 58 rushing touchdowns and 59 totals TD's are single-season Ohio High School Athletic Association records.

Head football coach, Tim Tyrrell describes Sperling as, "A better teammate and young man than he is a player. For the talent level that he is at, he is the most humble individual that I've been around."

"Everything is about his teammates, his family and the Hoban community. He's just a humble kid," Tyrell said.

When asked about his attributes as a player, Tyrell said, "I think he is the best football player in the state of Ohio. He just has very few weaknesses in his ability to play the game of football."

This is the second Ohio Mr. Football winner from Archbishop Hoban with the first being Tyrell Sutton, ’04.
