# MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics Department offers a sequence of courses that prepare students and respects individual interest and achievement. Goals for students throughout their time at Hoban include mastery of fundamental operations along with development of problem-solving skills and an appreciation for the structure and applications of mathematics.

The mathematics curriculum at Hoban prepares students to perform structured and analytical thinking. Through the study of algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus and statistics, students develop critical thinking skills and are able to apply the skills they have mastered to solve problems. Students learn that math skills – logic, organization, communication, etc. – can be applied to other subjects and everyday life. Hoban graduates are prepared for college level math.

Hoban offers a variety of advanced courses, including AP Calculus, AP Statistics, AP Computer Science, CCP Elementary Functions I and II and CCP Calculus. All honors and Advanced Placement courses require permission of the department. Initial class placement in grade nine is made on the basis of the High School Placement Test and previous academic work in mathematics. Algebra I, or placement beyond it by Hoban, is required for graduation.

Hoban students use technology to increase understanding and proficiency in mathematics. Computer and calculator use will be promoted, but computers, computer science and calculators will not replace mathematics or mathematics teachers. Computers and calculators will be used to make math accessible to students by presenting mathematical concepts in dynamic visual and numeric forms versus static analytic forms. They eliminate the repetitious and routine and will allow more time for the development of conceptual understanding as opposed to computational accuracy.

At least a scientific calculator is required for Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Geometry and Honors Geometry with Advanced Algebra. A TI-30 XS is strongly encouraged.

A graphing calculator is required for Algebra II, Honors Algebra II, Honors Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry, College Algebra, Statistics, Trigonometry, CCP Elementary Functions I and II, CCP Calculus, AP Calculus and AP Statistics. A TI-84 model is strongly encouraged.
