Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is a musical adaptation of Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve’s La Belle et La Bête, published in 1740. The original inspiration comes from the story of Cupid and Psyche from Book 4 of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. Many cultures around the world have a similar story in their mythology. Not everything is as it seems. There is good in all of us, the potential to learn and always a path to redemption.
The Beast, changed due to a lack of charity and empathy, is challenged to find love while in a monstrous form. His servants are also cursed, transforming into objects associated with their station. The actions of one affect the lives of many. Through Belle’s open heart and sacrifice, the curse is eventually broken. Taking the time to teach patience, humility and how to read, Belle opens the pathway for the Beast to learn how to be human again.
We all have something to offer, a story to tell, and the potential to change the understanding of our world. The Castle at Hoban is full of enchanted objects, helping us along the way while offering time, knowledge and wisdom. Open up to the possibility to learn from each other. Examine the content of the chapters, lessons offered, and open-ended stories we all present before jumping to conclusions about the cover. Make it a goal to read more, open yourself to find friendships in unexpected places, and have the charity to help someone succeed in second chance.
