The Education Committee of the board of directors established the Academic Hall of Honor in 1991 to recognize the academic achievements of Hoban graduates. It serves several purposes:
- To symbolize the school’s commitment to academics.
- To motivate students to their highest levels of achievement, both in the classroom and on college entrance examinations.
- To recognize academic excellence among individual students.
- To instill a sense of tradition among the classes of graduates of the school.
- To assist in recruiting efforts.
To earn the honor, a student must:
- Maintain a 3.80 grade point average
- Score at the 98th percentile nationally on the SAT or the ACT or have been named the valedictorian or salutatorian of the graduating class
- Graduate from Hoban after attending at least six semesters

Hoban Purchase Prize
The Hoban Purchase Prize is a recognition program to honor and display the most outstanding work of Hoban art students. Their work is purchased, framed and displayed on the walls throughout the school. From all the student artwork produced each year, the fine arts department faculty selects the top 10 pieces. These works are shared with the faculty and staff so that they can vote on their favorite artworks. The works are anonymous so that the pieces would be judged solely on artistic merit. The goal of the Purchase Prize is to highlight student artistic achievement, to create an ever-growing archive of student artwork and to enhance the school environment through the presence of creative energy.
View the 10-Year anniversary digital view book of all Purchase Prize winners 2014-2024.
Honor Roll
To be listed on the honor roll each quarter, a student must have a 3.333 grade-point average, with no grade lower than C-minus. No student may be included on the honor roll until any incomplete grade (I) has been made up.
There are three honor roll classifications:
- Highest Honors: 4.00+
- High Honors: 3.80 to 3.99
- Honors: 3.333 to 3.79
The honor roll is published at the end of each of the grading periods. Students on the highest honor roll for the first three quarters are invited to the Summa Cum Laude Honors Celebration in May.
To align with Hoban's policy of not ranking students, honor rolls are listed alphabetically.

Monsignor Richard A. Dowed School Spirit Awards
The highest award given by Hoban, the Monsignor Richard A. Dowed School Spirit Award singles out students who have made outstanding contributions of their time, effort and talent to the Hoban community and to the activities connected with the school. Faculty committees select students who have best exemplified the ideals of Christian service, leadership and spirit.
Each year one student from each grade level is selected for the award. An individual may receive the award more than once. The awards are announced at the Spring Awards Night in May.
The award dates back to 1957 and is named after the late pastor of nearby Annunciation Church (now Visitation of Mary), who convinced Archbishop Edward Hoban of the need for a new Catholic high school for boys in Akron and acquired the land that was to become its campus.
Monsignor A. Dowed Winners Through the Years
Note: From 1957 to 1959, the award was given to one senior. From 1968 to 1975, the award was open to more than one student from each grade level. In other years, the award was given to one student from each grade level.

National Honor Society
Seat of Wisdom Chapter
The purposes of Hoban's Seat of Wisdom Chapter of the National Honor Society are to honor outstanding students for their achievements and to provide service to both school and community.
To be a member, a student must have an accumulative grade point average of 3.750 after five consecutive semesters and fill out a student profile sheet. A faculty selection committee then reviews students' scholarship, leadership, character and service before offering students membership in NHS. The student must be able to demonstrate leadership and service.
Projects of the National Honor Society include:
- The Red Cross Blood Drive
- The Adopt-a-Family for Christmas project
- The tutoring program
- Christmas tree wrapping at the Children's Hospital Holiday Tree Festival.
Hoban's chapter is affiliated with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Its faculty coadvisers are Mr. Dan Bee, Ms. Monica Rodriquez and Mr. Phil Patrick.
Torchbearer Award
Created in 2022, this award is centered around those who light the way for their classmates and is anchored in the motif and symbolism of lightness. This winner epitomizes the essence of the Torchbearer quote that says:
“One that beareth a torch shadoweth oneself to give light to others.”
2024 Torchbearer Award recipients are Madison Curto and Cameron Young

Valedictorians and Salutatorians
The valedictorian of the graduating class is the senior with the highest cumulative grade-point average after seven semesters. The salutatorian is the second-highest. At the graduation ceremonies, the salutatorian delivers the welcoming speech and the valedictorian bids farewell.
Valedictorians and Salutatorians
Sadly, these records are incomplete. If you can help fill in any blanks in the table above, email the information to website@hoban.org. Some evidence would be necessary, like a newspaper clipping, a trophy, a certificate or a copy of the speech.
