Enrichment Opportunities

Hoban runs on a block schedule in which students have all seven periods on Monday (Silver Days), periods one through four on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Blue Days) and periods five through seven on Wednesdays and Fridays (Gold Days). This schedule allows for an enrichment period on Gold Days. Enrichment is typically divided into two smaller blocks to allow all students to participate in dynamic experiences that support academic growth and social and emotional wellness.

During the first part of enrichment, all students and educators in the building engage in an academic-focused period to allow for meetings between students and teachers for academic support, completion of makeup assignments or simply use it as a built-in study hall. During the second part of the block, Hoban's educators plan various activities based on student feedback and teachers' passions and interests. The activities range from card games, guitar club, cooking lessons, kickball, crocheting and everything in between. This time can also be used for meeting times for our student-centered clubs and organizations to alleviate the scheduling conflicts of before and after-school activities. Enrichment provides students with the opportunity to spend time with peers and Holy Cross educators, take a mental break from rigorous coursework and learn new hobbies and activities.

Mental Health Counseling

Hoban offers professional mental health counseling to students. A clinical counselor from Red Oak Behavioral Health is available to meet with students during regular school hours.

The counseling services that they provide are not in place of those available from your school counselor. These services are intended to provide an easier way for students to access mental health counseling for on-going issues and concerns.

Referrals for mental health counseling will be requested through your student’s Hoban school counselor. If you have questions or would like to inquire about setting up these services for your student, please contact your student’s school counselor for more details.

STUDENT WELLNESS

Through the process of helping our students to completeness, Hoban has designed a Student Wellness Initiative. As Catholic educators, we educate the entire person by fostering the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual wellness. In doing so, we maintain and strengthen a positive and safe learning environment for all.

The Student Wellness Program includes:
  • Education: Programs, activities and online information designed to educate students about the different components of wellness, including positive body image, stress management, healthy relationships and mental/emotional health

  • Testing: Drug and alcohol awareness and prevention policy, including mandatory random testing

  • Support: Counseling for any student who is in need

Extensive research has found that ongoing education is the most critical component of any wellness program to support high school students during a critical developmental stage and prevent students from using drugs and alcohol.

Students laugh during retreat

The concept of play is often lost in today’s society. I believe these non-traditional activities have strengthened the students’ academic achievements. We have to have balance in our life, and I believe students will be stronger in the next class after having time to decompress.
