Businesses & Community Partners

Thank you for supporting our student-athletes. The new OHSAA NIL policy allows high school students to engage in personal branding opportunities—but the rules are strict, and both students and businesses must comply to protect eligibility.
Hoban's role is to educate student-athletes and families about NIL policies and to ensure compliance. All NIL conversations must be directed to individual student-athletes and their parents and/or guardians. Hoban personnel cannot review, approve or negotiate contracts, help connect organizations with student-athletes, allow use of Hoban facilities or apparel or participate in or influence NIL deals.

How to Work with a Student-Athlete Legally:

  1. Contact the student or their parent/guardian directly.
  2. Create a written agreement that outlines:
    • Compensation
    • Expectations
    • Timeline and deliverables
    • Clear statement that no school affiliation will be used
  3. Keep all marketing separate from school branding.
  4. Ask the student to provide proof of OHSAA disclosure once submitted.

Do's & Don'ts

Businesses are Permitted to:

  • Collaborate directly with a student-athlete or their parent/guardian
  • Create legal, non-performance-based agreements
  • Use the student-athlete’s name, image, or likeness in marketing
  • Compensate the athlete in money or in-kind value (as long as it is written clearly)
  • Expect the student to appear in content wearing non-school-affiliated clothing

Businesses are Not Permitted to:

  • Use Hoban’s name, logos, uniforms, mascot, facilities or marks in any NIL content
  • Contact coaches or staff to initiate or arrange an NIL deal
  • Offer compensation tied to wins, stats, or playing time
  • Offer NIL compensation in exchange for enrollment, transfer or continued attendance
  • Conduct NIL-related activities on Hoban grounds or during school/team hours
  • Engage the student in partnerships involving gambling, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, adult entertainment, firearms or banned substances
