Hoban traveled southwest into Wayne County for a battle against a 10-win Norwayne team and came out victorious. Earning their 10th win in 11 games, the Knights played through a dogfight the entire 32-minutes. The Bobcats from Norwayne came out of the gates scoring the first 4 points of the game before Hoban found the bottom of the net on a layup from senior Thomas Crowe. The Knights found themselves tied after the first quarter at 19 all and it wasn't until the middle of the second quarter before Hoban was able to pull ahead using an 11-3 run behind senior Isaiah Young's 17-point first half performance. Hoban's defense in the first half was equally impressive, forcing Norwayne into 12 first half turnovers. However, Norwayne continued to battle until the buzzer sounded with Hoban up 39-33 at the half.
Coach TK Griffith made some adjustments in the locker room at halftime which slowed down Norwayne's leading scorer, Isaiah Portis, who scored 9 of his 27 points in the second half and made him work for every shot. The Bobcats were able to rally midway into the third quarter by going on a 7-0 run, closing the gap with Hoban up 41-40 with a little more than three minutes left in the third quarter. Both teams went back and forth the rest of the quarter, with Hoban staying on top 49-48 at the end of the period. The teams continued their back-and-forth scoring until the Knights defense finally wore down the Bobcats, holding them scoreless for almost a four-minute span late in the fourth quarter and found themselves up 60-57 with just over a minute left in the game. Freshman Jonas Nichols split a pair of free throws before Norwayne's Portis threw up a desperate banked in 3-pointer, making it a one point game with four seconds left. Hoban's Young was fouled on the inbounds and made both free throws, putting the Knights up 63-60 and the Knights' defense finished the game off by not allowing Norwayne to get a shot off as time expired.
Hoban will get back to work with practice Wednesday and Thursday before hosting Cleveland Central Catholic on Friday, then traveling to St Ed's for a huge showdown on Saturday.
