Team Coaches
Derek Carmichael became the head baseball coach in 2023 after two years as a varsity assistant coach at Jackson High School. He also spent four years as a varsity assistant coach at Massillon Perry High School. In addition, Derek has spent several years coaching in the Midwest Stars and Ohio Athletics programs, where he led summer teams and focused on player development year-round.
He inherits a program coming off back-to-back appearances in the state championship game, including a state championship in 2021.
“I am extremely excited to lead the Hoban Baseball program,” Carmichael said. “I have been blessed with great experiences throughout my coaching career that have led me to this opportunity. Hoban baseball has a strong foundation and rich history and together we will continue to pour all of our efforts into the success of the program. I look forward to further developing the players, program and the Hoban baseball brand. Go Knights!”
Derek is a graduate of Triway High School, where he was a three-sport captain. He went on to play baseball collegiately at the University of Akron and Malone University. His father, the late Sean Carmichael, led Triway baseball for over 25 years and also served as athletic director. His mother, Angela, currently serves as a principal in the Triway school district.
“Derek is one of the most impressive young educators and coaches I've met,” said Principal T.K. Griffith ‘89. “His pedigree is unparalleled, and his coaching experience on the field at Jackson and in the classroom at Perry bode well for the high level of expectations at Hoban. Like his father and mother, Derek is a person of integrity, class and values. I can't wait to see his vision come to fruition at Hoban.”
