Ave Crux, Spes Unica

Hoban is sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross, the first order of teaching brothers established in the United States. The Holy Cross educational tradition in this country dates from the founding of the University of Notre Dame in 1842. All Holy Cross schools are united by the motto—Ave Crux, Spes Unica (Hail the Cross, our Only Hope).

Hoban students are challenged to live up to the ideals of the Catholic faith through religious studies classes, sacramental opportunities, retreats and Christian service programs. This spiritual dimension complements the educational process, going beyond instruction that merely transmits specific knowledge and skills. A Holy Cross education fosters the values, attitudes and behaviors necessary for individuals to make a real difference in the world.

Education is about wholeness and relationships: the relationship between mind and heart, between scholarship and service, between students and teachers, between schools and society.

While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for eternal life.

10 Holy Cross Core Values

Based on the writings of Blessed Basil Moreau, Hoban has adopted a set of 10 core values. These values are essential to our identity as a Holy Cross school and reflect Hoban's philosophy of educating students in the faith.

Holy Cross values are the center of a Hoban education. They provide the balance, passion and discipline necessary to become a productive, yet compassionate citizen. They serve students in making good decisions and in realizing their unlimited potential.

Each academic year, Hoban chooses one core value on which to focus more attention. This allows students to examine different core values in more depth, and faculty incorporate the core value theme in their lessons and instruction. The core value theme for the 2019-20 academic year is divine providence.

Academic Hall of Honor Video

In recognition of their unyielding faith and service, Hoban dedicated the second-floor hallway in honor of Brothers Joe LeBon and Ed Libbers. Together, they have served Hoban for nearly 90 years, making them the longest-serving Brothers in Hoban history.
The hallway, which was previously the Brothers residence at Hoban, honors the history and legacy of the Congregation of Holy Cross and also recognizes members of the Academic Hall of Honor.
