CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

The Hoban BSU is for students of all grade levels. Members are involved in weekly discussions during meetings on late start Thursdays at 8 a.m. The BSU provides students with a culturally-directed community. Members organize fundraisers, participate in service projects, host guest speakers, take field trips and attend events inside and outside of the school.

Chess Club allows students to gather with friends for friendly competition. Ron Martin is faculty adviser. 

Inclusivity is one of Hoban's Holy Cross core values. Committed to Inclusivity Alliance (CIA) is a club formed to support the LGBTQ community and their allies at Hoban. All are welcome. The faculty advisers are Amie Mancine, Desiree Moyer and Kate Ribovich.

Dungeons and Dragons Club allows students to gather and meet new friends, learn the game rules, develop strategy, ethics and positive competition. The game also strengthens students' leadership abilities by taking responsibility in their decisions and allows a creative outlet and expression. Ben Sandvick is faculty adviser. 

Faith and Fellowship provides students an opportunity to pray and share their journeys of faith with one another in a small group setting.

Guitar Club brings together students who have an interesting playing and/or learning to play the guitar. Students will also have the opportunity to learn to use all associated equipment. Mitch Wagner is faculty adviser. 

The Knights for Life is a student organization committed to promoting the sanctity of life. Our commitment to a consistent ethic of life compels us to educate the Hoban community about the harmful effects of abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, torture and unjust wars on both the individual and society.

The primary focus of our group is to promote and support life-giving alternatives that are spiritually and emotionally healthy. We challenge all those who believe that life is sacred to work cooperatively to promote a consistent ethic of life.

This club teaches students how to rebuild and restore Hot Wheels, Matchbox toy (diecast) cars and/or fine-scale model making (cars, jets, ships, etc.). Jason Deal is faculty adviser. 

Peer mentors is a dynamic group of students who are committed to fostering a positive and caring atmosphere in the school. Trained as sensitive and responsible listeners, they provide monthly activities and discussion in the freshman religious studies classes to ease freshman adjustment to the Hoban community and to high school life in general. They serve as a source of support and encouragement to their peers and help field difficult situations that may not otherwise be brought to the attention of the student services (guidance) staff. 

Peer mentors also sponsor activities related to student health and well-being, such as a self-defense class and guest speakers on topics like stress management.

Pokemon club is open to students of all grade levels with an interest in all things Pokemon including all Pokemon video games, anime, Pokemon Go, card game, and more.  Moderated by Zach Feador.

Project HOPE enables students, Holy Cross educators and volunteers to share food and fellowship with members of the Akron community who are experiencing homelessness or other hardships. Students can submit volunteer hours as part of the Christian service requirement. Chris Fahey and Jimmy Mulholland are faculty moderators.

SADD, or Students Against Destructive Decisions, is a national organization committed to reducing the tragedy brought about by alcohol, drugs and other choices that endanger the well-being of students. 

The Hoban chapter is a group that organizes activities throughout the year, such as:

• Homecoming weekend pledge banner 
• Red Ribbon Week
• Prom Promise
• SADD workshop at Quicken Loans Arena
• Speakers and assemblies
• Fundraisers
• The winter mitten drive

The faculty adviser of the chapter is Jamie Adaway. 

Weather permitting, the ski and snowboarding club makes five trips each winter to the Boston Mills/Brandywine Ski Resort, using chartered bus transportation. Participants can either rent skiing equipment or use their own. Gaige Barrett is the faculty adviser. 

The Society of Hoban Gentlemen is a club for young men where they join together in prayer, fellowship and service. Saint George is our patron, and the chaplet of Saint George is prayed in the meetings. These men meet regularly and discuss issues facing young Catholic men in today's society, organize service projects for the community and have fun. Camaraderie is key to the success of the Society of Hoban Gentlemen.

The Student Ambassador program is a leadership opportunity for students in grades 10-12 who are enthusiastic about representing Hoban and the Holy Cross values and tradition.

A Student Ambassador is expected to maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5,  have a good record of attendance and participate in all mandatory events. You will be requested to host shadows, lead campus tours during open houses, participate at Seventh Grade Visitation Day and serve the admissions office by completing various assigned duties and participating in events. Additionally, you may be called upon to serve as a spokesperson on behalf of the student body. You are an example of what it means to be a Hoban Knight and must uphold our mission to welcome one another with the hospitality of Christ.

• Student Ambassador embroidered polo shirts are available for a discounted price of $15.
• Student activity passes are available for half price to all who participated as a Student Ambassador for the 2018-19 school year. Ambassadors for the school year will receive a discounted pass for the following school year.
• Student Ambassadors are recognized at an end-of-year social. Gifts for our seniors and underclassmen will be awarded.
• Serving as a Student Ambassador is a great addition to your resume and the admissions office is always happy to write recommendation letters for you.

The staff adviser for the group is the admissions office staff.

Student council consists of council officers, officers of the four classes and chairpersons of the standing committees: activities, spirit, marketing /video and fundraising.  It is the function of student council to coordinate student events and to work with the administration for the benefit of the school, by acting as a voice for the student body.

Hoban students who serve those in need and support and celebrate fellow classmates. Kristan Heller is the faculty advisor.

The Vocations Discernment Group is for students who want to spend time contemplating their relationship with God and who He is calling them to be as they move from Hoban into their adult lives. The group meets once each month with The Rev. Eric Garris, the Vocations Director for the Diocese of Cleveland.
