BROTHER JAMES SPOONER HOLY CROSS HEART AND MIND AWARD

According to Blessed Basil Moreau, the foundation of a Holy Cross school is one in which education and instruction should always be placed side by side, "the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart."

As Holy Cross educators it is our responsibility to prepare our students to be change agents within our society. The Brother James Spooner Holy Cross Heart and Mind Award honors Hoban employees who live Moreau's vision of inspiring the heart and mind. Similar to the Monsignor Dowed Award, this award recognizes a Holy Cross educator who makes outstanding contributions of their time, effort and talent to inspire Hoban students.

Recipients meet the following requirements:

  • Hoban faculty or staff members with at least five years experience in the Hoban community
  • Model the Holy Cross core values during daily interactions with students, parents and colleagues
  • Demonstrate a commitment to inspiring Hoban's students' hearts and minds

Ralph Orsini receives the 2024 Brother James Spooner Holy Cross Heart and Mind Award

2024 Brother James Spooner, CSC Holy Cross Heart and Mind Award Recipient

Ralph Orsini has spent 30 years plus at Hoban as a leader of men and women in the classroom and on the field. A quiet, dignified man, this humble leader has modeled resilience, class and faith in all that he does in the classroom and beyond.

Consistent in his faith and family life, he and his wife raised three kids at Hoban who attended games and practices since the time they could walk—all three walked across the stage at the Akron Civic Theatre and all three represented Hoban as student-athletes and student council leaders--buying into the Hoban Family 100%.

In addition to being known as a rock solid family man, he also represents a rock solid faith life. Through his actions, words and interactions, Ralph models the humility of the Brothers of Holy Cross and silently models integrity for all. Few would argue that this man embodies the kindness and compassion of Brother James as he has devoted his entire life to Hoban.

It is fitting that he wins this award in a landslide as voted on by his peers. It is fitting that he will retire from Hoban this spring as well. As a dedicated coach, he loves the Law of the Knights: "The strength of the knights is the team, and the strength of the team is the knight."
