Knights Abroad 2025
Travel offers significant educational benefits, enriching learning beyond traditional classroom settings. It fosters real-world application of knowledge, enhances social and communication skills, promotes global citizenship and inspires personal growth. Over summer break, Hoban Holy Cross educators planned four student trips to Gettysburg, Costa Rica, Iceland and Europe.
Iceland
Twenty-three students and four chaperones traveled to Iceland to experience the natural wonder and phenomena that the country provides. Some trip highlights for the group included hiking on a glacier, seeing dozens of waterfalls dispersed throughout the whole country, and enjoying a relaxing spa day at the geothermal hot spring of the famous Blue Lagoon. Students had time to explore the city of Reykjavik as well as learn about the volcanoes and glaciers found there, to understand what it means to call Iceland the land of “ice and fire.”
Gettysburg
Students went on a four-day historical trip to the Civil War Battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There they went to the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center and the Lutheran Seminary Museum to see the first day's battlefield. Students used firsthand historical items such as maps and letters to get a vision of the battle. Students also had assignments to research a Union or Confederate regiment to see how many survived, their location during the battle, and the role they played.
Costa Rica
Hoban students explored the natural wonder and cultural immersion of Costa Rica. Students were able to immerse themselves in nature through rafting, zip-lining the jungle and snorkeling. Students were also able to enjoy a pineapple tour, horseback riding and a chocolate tour. Throughout the trip, students could immerse themselves in the beauty and splendor that is Costa Rica.
Europe
Forty-eight students spent over two weeks on a European vacation. The group began their trip in Paris, visiting the Eiffel Tower, Musee D’Orsay, the Louvre Museum and attended Mass at Notre Dame Cathedral. They spent one day in Normandy, visiting the Utah Beach, the D-Day Museum and the American Cemetery in Coleville-sur-Mer. A quick flight brought the students to Nice, where they toured the city and relaxed on the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. After a day trip and tour of Monaco, the group explored Italy, including Montecatini, Florence, Rome, Vatican City, Pompeii, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Caserta. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime trip.
