Dear Class of 2028 and Families,
Ohio law requires all students to earn one-half credit of financial literacy as a graduation requirement. Hoban students fulfill this requirement during the summer prior to their junior year through a self-paced online course delivered via the Canvas learning platform. This approach allows students to meet the graduation requirement without interrupting their academic year course schedules.
The financial literacy program that Hoban students complete was created by AlphaJump and a team of Catholic educators from Ohio. The program features classroom-tested readings and original videos to deliver course content. AlphaJump's Personal Finance+ course is used and trusted by some of the finest Catholic schools in Ohio.
In early June, Personal Finance+ will appear on students’ Canvas dashboards. Students are encouraged to begin the class immediately to better understand the time it will take to complete. The entire program is estimated to take about 45-60 hours, meeting state requirements for online learning. However, course completion time will vary from student to student.
We ask parents to partner with us, help students budget time and complete the entire class by August 17. Students must earn a 68% or higher to pass the course. Students will take a comprehensive final exam and must receive a 68% or higher in order to pass. As with all the quizzes for this course, you can take the final up to three times.
There will be short readings, videos and quizzes embedded in the modules. The class will cover the seven areas required by the state:
- financial responsibility
- money management
- informed consumers
- investing
- credit
- debt
- insurance
The supplemental units will cover digital citizenship, economics, future tech, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and soft skills. We assure you that everything covered in the course is useful and practical.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
True to You,
Ms. Perrow
